Operating Practices

Master your aircraft with PMOPA's Operating Practices.

Standardization is the foundation of aviation safety. The PMOPA Operating Practices (POPs) represent our community’s best practices for operating the M-Class fleet. Derived directly from the POHs for each aircraft type, and compiled with the collective experience of senior members of the M-Class community, these profiles are designed to establish a safe, consistent, repeatable flow during critical phases of flight.

By flying a standardized profile, pilots internalize a baseline of "normal." When normal is strictly defined, it is not only easily repeatable, but also any deviation—whether mechanical, environmental, or operational—becomes immediately obvious. This helps the pilot promptly recognize the anomaly and make appropriate corrections in a timely manner.

Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM) and Deviations

PMOPA's Operating Procedures are designed for a normally operating aircraft, within limitations and under typical flight conditions. Always keep in mind that aviation is dynamic. Sound ADM requires the PIC to recognize when environmental or operational factors dictate a departure from the standard profile.

Pilots must be prepared to modify these baselines when encountering situations such as:

  • Known or forecast icing conditions, or active airframe icing.
  • Strong crosswinds, wind shear, or high gust spreads.
  • Significant convective or mechanical turbulence.
  • Exceptionally short or long runway operations.
  • Approaches with glidepaths significantly steeper or shallower than standard 3-degree angles.
  • Any abnormal or emergency checklist execution.
