Born to Fly: Pensacola’s Aviation Legacy

Captain Sterling Gilliam, USN (Ret), Director, National Naval Aviation Museum

Known as the “Cradle of Naval Aviation,” Pensacola has inspired generations of aviators and continues to represent the very best of flying tradition, innovation, and excellence. In this uplifting session, we’ll explore the city’s rich aviation heritage and the enduring spirit that connects military aviators and general aviation pilots alike. From the earliest flight training programs to the iconic Blue Angels, Pensacola’s story reminds us why we fly — for the challenge, the mastery, and the sheer joy of taking to the skies.

10:00am-10:30am

Flying with a Purpose

Facilitator: Monty Chicola

Flying with a Purpose is a facilitated discussion exploring the many ways PA-46 pilots use their aircraft and skills to serve others, from flying veterans and patients to medical care, supporting animal rescue and humanitarian relief, or helping families in crisis. Attendees will be invited to share personal stories, lessons learned, and practical insights from charitable flights, while learning how others can get involved responsibly and safely. Beyond the mission itself, charitable flying offers meaningful opportunities to build real-world proficiency in planning, decision-making, and flight operations, reinforcing the skills that make PA-46 pilots safer and more capable every time they fly.

Flight 360°: Human Factors and Managing Risk Before, During, and After Flight

Presenter: Tom Rau, MSIP Platinum CFI

Risk management begins before the engine starts and continues after the wheels touch down. In this interactive session, you’ll explore how human factors affect every phase of flight — pre-flight planning, in-flight decisions, and post-flight reflection. You’ll learn strategies to recognize risks, make smarter decisions under pressure, and enhance situational awareness, giving you practical tools to fly safer and more proficiently in your PA-46.

Lunch

12:45pm-1:30pm

Flight 360°: Human Factors and Managing Risk Before, During, and After Flight (Part 2)

Presenter: Tom Rau, MSIP Platinum CFI

Continuing from Part 1, this session explores real-world case studies and FAA enforcement examples, showing how human factors and risk management intersect with safety and compliance. You’ll gain practical strategies to strengthen judgment and minimize risk on every flight.

1:30pm-2:30pm

Flight Data Monitoring: Looking in the Mirror to Fly It Right

Moderator: Kimberly Coryat, PMOPA Safety Committee Chair
Panelists: Ryan Oltman, Dan Torgeson, Ed Trautman

The best pilots are always learning, and post-flight analysis is one of the most powerful tools for improvement. In this moderated panel, experienced PA-46 pilots share how they consistently review their flights to identify areas for refinement and enhance future performance. Using tools like CloudAhoy and FlySto, they’ll demonstrate practical methods for analyzing flight data, discuss common lessons learned, and offer personal best practices that you can apply to your own flying. You’ll leave this session with actionable insights to help you “fly it right” every time.

2:30pm-2:45pm

Afternoon Break

2:45pm-3:30pm

Making the Go No-Go Decision

Moderator: Bill Archer, MSIP Platinum CFI

Every pilot faces the critical question: should I fly today, or not? In this moderated panel, experienced PA-46 owner-pilots share how they approach flight planning, establish personal minimums, and communicate with passengers when making the go/no-go decision. They’ll discuss real-world scenarios, including when to divert or execute a go-around if conditions aren’t right for the intended destination. You’ll gain practical strategies to make safer, more confident decisions before and during every flight.

Registration

PMOPA Regional Events are designed for pilots, owners, and operators who want to fly their Piper PA-46 with greater confidence, capability, and margin. These one-day events deliver practical, scenario-based education focused on real-world operations, risk management, and aircraft-specific best practices, taught by instructors and experts who understand the M-Class environment. Beyond the classroom, Regional Events offer the opportunity to connect with fellow PA-46 pilots, share experiences, and learn from others who face the same operational decisions you do. Whether you are new to the aircraft or highly experienced, you will leave better informed, more prepared, and better connected to the PA-46 community.

Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel your registration, the following refunds will be applied, based on the date you cancel:

  • April 4th - 90% refund
  • April 18th - 50% refund
  • After May 2nd - no refund

PMOPA incurs costs for an event, even if a registrant cancels. The closer to the event date that the registration is cancelled, the higher the costs incurred by PMOPA. Cancellation fees help offset those costs. PMOPA leadership may consider exceptions to this policy in limited cases of hardship (e.g., hospitalization, death in immediate family) although exceptions to this policy are not guaranteed to be granted.

Ground Transportation

To keep registration fees as low as possible for PMOPA Regional Events, PMOPA does not arrange or provide ground transportation to or from the airport and the events. Taxis and ride share services (e.g., Uber, Lyft) are readily available in the Pensacola area or rental car reservations can be made via your chosen FBO.

Pensacola Activities & Dining

National Naval Aviation Museum

The National Naval Aviation Museum is the world’s largest Naval Aviation museum and one of the most-visited museums in the state of Florida. Share the excitement of Naval Aviation’s rich history and see more than 150 beautifully restored aircraft representing Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Aviation. These historic and one-of-a-kind aircraft are displayed both inside the Museum’s over 350,000 square feet of exhibit space and outside on its 37-acre grounds.

PMOPA greatly appreciates the opportunity to use meeting space at the Museum, and we are thankful for the support of the museum's leadership, including Captain Sterling Gilliam, USN (Ret), Director, National Naval Aviation Museum, whose involvement made this event possible.

Dining/Restaurants

PMOPA member Monty Chicola recommends the following restaurants in Pensacola. He has offered to coordinate informal (pay on your own) group dinners on Friday evening for attendees of the Eastern Regional Event.

The Fish House, located in downtown Pensacola
The Grand Marlin Restaurant & Oyster Bar, located on Pensacola Bay (one needs to go over the bridge)

Sponsorship Opportunities

PMOPA Regional Event sponsorships are ideal for companies that support the ownership, operation, maintenance, training, and safety of Piper M-Class aircraft and want meaningful, face-to-face engagement with committed aircraft owners and pilots. Sponsoring a Regional Event allows companies to connect face-to-face with engaged aircraft owners in a setting that encourages conversation, learning, and long-term relationships. Sponsorship support helps PMOPA deliver high-quality programming while giving sponsors visibility with a discerning audience that values expertise, service, and products that enhance safety and ownership experience.

Benefits of becoming a sponsor include:

  • Visibility with a focused audience of Piper M-Class owners and pilots who actively invest in safety, training, and aircraft care
  • On-site presence and direct interaction during the Regional Event program
  • Recognition on the event webpage and promotional emails
  • Alignment with PMOPA’s safety and education mission through support of high-quality training content
  • Relationship-building in a collegial, low-pressure environment that encourages authentic conversations

Sponsorship: $1,000 also includes one event registration (PMOPA member rate*).

Additional sponsorship opportunities can be created to meet a sponsoring company's goals. Please contact PMOPA's Mike Nichols to discuss sponsorship ideas you would like to propose.

* The non-member event registration fee is $300 higher than the member rate and includes one year of PMOPA membership.
